The Main Reason for Lost Teeth
Many people believe tooth loss is caused by decay. It’s generally not. It’s because of gum disease. And it can be virtually unnoticeable right up until you have a lost tooth. Symptoms may include bleeding gums when brushing or flossing and loose teeth. If you’ve been advised you need gum surgery, you may be happy to know that you can control gum disease with a variety of non-surgical techniques.
Gum Disease Can Contribute to Conditions Such as Heart Disease and Stroke
Recent medical research has led many doctors to reach a startling conclusion: gum disease, stroke, and heart disease are linked. Because heart disease can be fatal, it is clear that gum disease is a serious matter. The American Dental Association estimates that 8 in 10 Americans have gum disease. If this were any other disease or affliction, it might be considered an epidemic! Many dentists think it is. They also knew gum disease wouldn’t be labelled as an epidemic because “people don’t die from it.” The worst thing that happens is that you lose teeth. Not a pleasant scenario – but certainly not a life-threatening situation. But now that’s all changed.
The American Academy of Periodontology reports: “Studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases.” Perio disease is characterized by an infection of the gums. These bacteria may travel to the bloodstream – where it then has a pathway to the heart.
With periodontal disease in the advanced stages, the treatment is typically surgical. Gum surgery doesn’t sound like fun, but it is usually successful in getting the condition under control, and it’s generally covered by major insurance plans. With milder gum disease, there is an effective non-surgical treatment that, when combined with improved dental hygiene, can generally halt the spread of the disease. This is normally also covered under dental insurance plans.
Teeth may be lost from an accident or other trauma, but the most common cause of tooth loss is gum disease and/or decay. So, why is it a big problem if you lose a tooth? First, losing even one tooth can cause other teeth to shift. This can affect how you chew and your body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food. Other unpleasant things can happen; your face contour can change shape, often looking “sunken.” This can cause you to appear much older. Your speech can also be impacted. Since it’s more difficult to chew with missing teeth, you may find yourself avoiding tougher food choices and instead of selecting food that contains more carbohydrates. This, in turn, can cause you to gain weight. The best approach for treating a missing tooth (or multiple missing teeth) is with dental implants. An implant can replace any number of teeth. They can look so much like natural teeth that even a dentist has to look closely to tell there’s a difference.
