What are Skin Tags?
These are non-cancerous growth (made up of blood vessels and collagen) found on the skin. A small, thin stalk called a peduncle connects it to the skin.
Skin tags are tiny, normally smaller than 2mm in size but some might grow to several centimetres. They are soft and painless to touch.
They can either be:
Smooth and round.
Wrinkly and asymmetrical.
Threadlike resembling rice grains.
Their colour can vary from being flesh-coloured to becoming darker than the surrounding skin. Twisting a skin tag can make it darker due to the obstruction of blood flow.
They occur in both sex and can appear anywhere on the body.
They are usually found in:
Armpits.
Groin.
Thighs.
Eyelids.
Neck.
The area under the breast.
Causes
The exact cause for the occurrence of skin tags is still vague. Some of the causes that are attributed to their occurrence are:
Friction.
Resistance to insulin leading to Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.
Occurrence is more common in Pregnancy.
Hormonal imbalance has been found to be the cause in rare cases.
Though it is genetic, not everyone at the same family is affected.
Treatment
Skin tags are neither contagious nor dangerous but it is cosmetically disfiguring.
Do not try to remove the skin tags on your own as removing skin tags might cause bleeding, burns and infection. Do not attempt to remove it by tying thread or hair around the tags as these may cause excessive pain and infection. Refrain from applying acids/irritants/home remedies on it as these may contribute to the darkening of the area. The best advice is to let it be handled by your dermatologist.

Cryotherapy
Surgery
Electrosurgery
Ligation
Laser treatment
Depending on the type of lesion, the removal method is chosen and performed after application of topical anaesthesia.
