People with depression can experience low mood, negative outlook on themselves and life, diminished energy and concentration, difficulty falling or staying asleep, changes in appetite and even thoughts of being better off dead. Anxiety can be just as debilitating and ranges in symptoms from specific phobias or panic attacks to generalized anxiety, i.e. a “worrier” about everything. Obsessive-compulsive Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are also associated with significant anxiety. At Foundation psychiatry, you will find relief from your depression, anxiety or other psychiatric symptoms. Are You Too Busy to Meditate?
While we may be aspiring for inner peace, there's no denying our everyday lives are hectic. In fact, an aspect of mindfulness is acknowledging busyness—as opposed to denying it.
With heightened mindfulness (fully paying attention to whatever is happening in our lives in a nonjudgmental manner) we develop discernment—the ability to know if our myriad of activities is serving us or reducing our quality of life.
Through mindfulness-increasing practices, such as meditation, we increase our executive function to know which tasks need to be prioritized. We also develop discrimination to know when we need a break and quiet repose.
Recently, I had to make a choice to cleave one of my activities. My time is short and precious. It was a sacrifice; but, soon after, I felt lighter. I made this choice from a place of deeper knowing—an awareness, I believe, was cultivated through meditation.
According to the Yoga Tradition, this intuition is obtained by an aspect of the mind called, the Buddhi—it shares an etymological root with Buddha. The Buddhi is privy to higher wisdom which is revealed during contemplation and silence. Like the conscience, The Buddhi’s job is to guide us to make wise decisions.
The Tradition explains further, meditation is prescribed to dust our mental lens, so the Buddhi can perceive the truth. Then a practitioner makes purposeful decisions—not reflexive reactions from emotions gone amok.
This control does not render us emotionless. In fact, this skill allows us to channel emotions creatively. Properly harnessed emotions can be used to solve problems and catalyze behavioral change. Furthermore, when we are swayed, we have resilience. We can see the forest for the trees and recover more quickly.
None of the aforementioned benefits require retirement to a Himalayan cave. The most important factor is desire—the desire to attain more awareness, the desire to attain this mental and emotional fortitude.
Start simply; meditating is like working out. In the beginning, a little goes a long way! You must build up your “meditation muscles”.
When you wake up in the morning, before you begin your tasks, splash a little cold water on your face. Next, sit tall and comfortably. For about a minute, mentally scan and survey your physical body. Then, for about a minute, take some deep slow breaths. Finally, shift your attention to one space—the bridge between the nostrils is effective for steadying attention. For another minute or two, gently allow your attention to be on the feeling of the breath at this space. Let whatever rises in your mind to come forward. But, with gentle determination keep your attention on the feeling of the breath in the space.
Over time, or if you are feeling ambitious, you can repeat this process again at work—even in a bathroom stall. You can do it again before retiring. Nine minutes may change your life.
This is how I practice. I have two children, I'm a single mother, and I have a full-time job. I sit for a few minutes in the morning; then, I sit for a few minutes in the evening. Some sittings are blissful, sometimes it’s work just to be still. But, the benefits are evident when I have the resolve to stay calm during my daughter’s temper tantrum and when I can find peace in rush hour traffic. It’s not about being the Dalai Lama. It is about being able to live your own life skillfully. Speech Therapy Atlanta
